Sochi State University was established in 1989 as the Educational and Scientific Center for Training and Professional Development of staff for recreation and tourism industry. The main subdivision of the Center was the branch of the Kuban State University.  Three years later the Branch University became Sochi State Institute for Recreation and Tourism and in 1997 acquires the status of a university. In 2011 Sochi State University of Tourism and Recreation was renamed to the Federal State budgetary educational institution of higher education "Sochi State University". In 2017 Sochi State University acquired a special status – the status of Krasnodar region Flagship University.
 
On 11 March, 2009 by order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation Galina Romanova – Professor, Dr. of Economics, was appointed rector of SSU. 
 
Nowadays there are 5 faculties at the State Sochi University: Faculty of Tourism and Services; Ecology and Engineering Faculty; Faculty of Economics and Management Process; Faculty of Social and Education Studies; Faculty of Law and also the Center for additional professional education. In 2010 SSU established the University college, and in 2011, the State Sochi University acquired "The Sochi economic and technological college" (the oldest college of Krasnodar Region) as a structural division. So the "The university economic and technological college" was established as a result of merging of two colleges into one. SSU also has a branch university in Anapa (350 km up the Black see coast).
 
SSU is nowadays a recognized leader in the South of Russia in staff training for tourism and recreation industry and provides education on a wide range of programs from Hotel and restaurant services to landscape design. The students (about 7500) have the opportunity to take full-time, part-time programs including the ones using the distance learning technologies. The University facilities include: The University College of Economics and Technology, Center for Additional Professional Education, Postgraduate Department, Alumni Employment Department, Distance Learning Center, Training hotel "Sun Wind" and Training cafeteria "Atoll", Health and Recreation Center, Publishing Center, Center for Energy Saving and Nonconventional Power, professional education Testing Center, Library and the University History Museum. SSU regularly issues the student newspaper "Sochi State University", the scientific magazine "SSU Izvestiya" and also the Black Sea historical magazine "By-gone years".
 
Social Work and Volunteering
The SSU students are strongly engaged in social activities - volunteering, cultural activity, ecological education.
 
The health-recreational training center is open for students who go in for such sports as gymnastics, wrestling, aerobics, table tennis, and so on. There are sport clubs for volleyball, basketball, badminton, handball and football.
 
Employment
The Alumni Employment Department provides career counseling, assists graduated students in employment process and helps them adapt to the labor market. In the Department the students are provided with employer’s information, labor market analysis, job advertisement and other information.
Here they can learn how to write an eye-catchy resume, a job application, how to act in a job interview in order to successfully kick-start their career. The Alumni Employment Department also gives information about educational projects, seminars, master-classes that help young specialists successfully enter the labor market and move smoothly up the career ladder. 
 
Quality Management System
The SSU quality management system aims to improve quality of teaching process, education and research in order to reach the university's strategic goals. SSU quality management system based on the International Standards ISO 9000:2000 enables the university to demonstrate the ability to provide the education at a level that meets the high international/national standards and demands of employers and the labor market. The University’s activity is being constantly examined and monitored in order to improve the educational and scientific results. According to the quality management requirements the main goal of the University is to improve the customers satisfaction (employers, society and the state) providing them with high quality specialists, researchers for the Sochi tourism industry.
